Kaiser Permanente completes rollout of electronic medical records

Kaiser Permanente announced Monday that it has completed the rollout of the outpatient portion of its electronic medical records program, KP HealthConnect.

The last outpatient facilities to go live, in mid-April, were part of the Oakland Medical Center, Kaiser said. Facilities at Richmond Medical Center and Santa Clara Medical Center went live in March.

This means that 8.7 million members and all 13,000 Kaiser physicians in nine states and the District of Columbia now have access to electronic records.

Campaign to end ‘abortion capital’ Britain

MPs will today launch a campaign to cut the number of abortions carried out and reduce the upper time limit for termination from 24 to 20 weeks.
Campaigners warn a “less casual” approach to abortion is now needed and hope to reduce the number of terminations made for social reasons.

By lowering the time limit for these abortions, they estimate 2,300 lives a year could be saved.

Medical groups sue California

A consortium of health care advocacy groups filed a class-action lawsuit Monday against the state of California, hoping to block a historic

10 percent across-the-board cut in Medi-Cal and Denti-Cal payments scheduled to take effect July 1.

The groups - including the California Medical Association, the California Hospital Association and the California Dental Association - contend that lawmakers overstepped their constitutional authority, and that the cuts would violate the state’s obligation to ensure that Medi-Cal patients have the same access to health care as the general public.

Texas Medical Association names president, president-elect

The Texas Medical Association has named neurologist Dr. William Fleming of Houston its president-elect and Dr. Josie Williams as president.

Fleming will serve as president-elect of America’s largest state medical society for one year then assume the presidency next year, while Williams, a gastroenterologist and internal medicine specialist, will serve as president for one year.

Report Says Basic Medical Care Could Save Lives of 6 Million Children a Year

A new report says the lives of millions of young children could be saved each year if basic medical care and medicine are made available to the poor. Douglas Bakshian has more from Manila.

The report by the U.S. organization Save the Children says about 10 million children die every year from easily preventable and treatable diseases. About six million of those could be saved with basic services.
